EuCanImage success at ECR 2025

The EuCanImage Consortium was proud to represent its project at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2025, which took place in Vienna, Austria, from February 26 to March 2, 2025. The project partners made the most of this opportunity to share updates and insights by organizing a dedicated end-user workshop, an in-silico trial, and several focused talks.

End-User Workshop and In-Silico Trial

During ECR 2025, the EuCanImage Consortium hosted a highly specialized workshop highlighting the project’s methodology, achievements, and real-world applications.

Session 1 introduced the diverse data types integrated within the EuCanImage framework, including the Data Portal and the metadata catalogue, detailing its content and structure. Clinical variables and data availability within the framework were also discussed, culminating in a guided demonstration on accessing data via the EuCanImage repository.

Session 2 took a hands-on approach, presenting specific use cases, relevant tools, and their roles in clinical research. The in-silico trial was demonstrated, showcasing how it can simulate clinical studies. Participants then engaged directly by working on pre-selected case scenarios within the trial.

The workshop was led and moderated by Dr. Maciej Bobowicz (Medical University of Gdańsk), who also discussed non-imaging data and data access. Prof. Katerine Riklund (Umeå University) covered imaging data and clinical variable sets. Marcel Koek and Prof. Stefan Klein (Erasmus Medical Centre) focused on the data platform and metadata catalogue. Use cases were introduced by Lidia Garrucho (University of Barcelona), Tobias Heimann (Siemens Healthineers), and Samuele Ghezzo (radiomics.bio), highlighting liver, colorectal, and breast applications. Anders Nordell, Maria van der Pahlen, and Embla Klingberg (Collective Minds Radiology) demonstrated the tools and led the in-silico trial.

EuCanImage: A European Repository for AI in Cancer Imaging

Prof. Karim Lekadir, the project coordinator, delivered an insightful talk showcasing EuCanImage’s achievements. He elaborated on the concept of FAIR data repositories and their transformative potential in cancer imaging. The presentation also explored how these repositories enhance the use of AI in radiology and how existing data collections can be accessed and reused effectively.

ECR 2025 Highlights

Throughout the congress, EuCanImage was prominently featured at the EIBIR booth. The EIBIR team distributed the official project leaflet and addressed visitor inquiries. Consortium members were periodically available to provide in-depth insights.

Additionally, Prof. Lekadir delivered another notable presentation titled “FUTURE-AI: A Code of Practice for Trustworthy and Ethical AI”. This talk addressed critical themes around ethical AI, best practices in medical AI development, and practical guidelines for everyday application.
